Choosing Your Bathroom Towels

We suggest you consider these three things:

1. Fabric

Cotton is by far the most popular fabric used for towels. The two most popular types of cotton used for luxury towels are Egyptian Cotton and Turkish Cotton.

Egyptian Cotton Towels are composed of very long and thick thread loops, using cotton from Egypt. This creates a greater surface area, absorbing much more moisture. This is what gives Egyptian Cotton towels their soft and fluffy feel that many of our customers adore. Egyptian cotton towels are also extremely durable and machine washable - making them the towel of choice for high end hotels.

Turkish Cotton Towels are made using long staple cotton from Turkey. Turkish Cotton is plush, but slightly less absorbent. Rather than absorb water extremely quickly, it pushes water off your skin, leaving you feeling fresh and revitalised after a wash. These towels feel denser. They also dry much quicker and prevent mildew and musky smells. This is very ideal in bathrooms with less than ideal airflow.

Ultimately, both fabrics are luxurious in their own ways so it's hard to go wrong. Trust your skin - do you prefer a soft and fluffy towel...or a thicker, plush towel that will dry rapidly?

2. GSM (Grams per square metre)

GSM is a good indicator of quality. It refers to how many grams are in a square metre of fabric. The higher the GSM a towel is, the more absorbent and durable it is more likely to be. There is no hard and fast rule, but as a general idea:

Low quality towel - 200-400GSM
Higher quality towel - 400-600GSM
Sheridan Luxury Egyptian Bath Towel - 660GSM
Sheridan Luxury Retreat Bath Towel - 700GSM

However, GSM is not the only indicator of quality. A good towel maker will use the highest quality fabric and manufacturing methods, so it is recommended to use a trusted brand with a good reputation.

3. Size

Lastly, check the dimensions of the towels before buying. Although sizes are fairly standard, all manufacturers have different size towels. For example, Sheridan's Egyptian Luxury Hand Towel and Bath towels are about 10-20cm longer than most equivalent alternatives.
